5 Smaller Prospect Trades To Keep An Eye On

Plus: Two notable promotions, a new Hot Sheet & our home for all trade deadline coverage.

Happy Trade Deadline! We’re tracking every deal as the clock ticks down to the 6 p.m. ET deadline. We’re also ranking every prospect that gets traded in real time. While there were several prominent deals yesterday, here are five smaller ones that still involved prospects with interesting traits to monitor.

Prospect Promotions

Walker Jenkins, OF, Twins: Jenkins’ arrival in High-A was slowed by a hamstring injury that sidelined him for two months. But even with that delay, Jenkins is headed to the Midwest League before August arrives. The Twins’ 2023 first-round pick and top prospect has hit .295/.426/.443 this year with nearly twice as many walks (36) as strikeouts (19).

Welbyn Francisca, SS, Guardians: On Monday, the Guardians announced they were promoting their No. 14 prospect Welbyn Francisca from the Arizona Complex League to Low-A Lynchburg. Francisca hit .328/.418/.523 with six home runs and 11 stolen bases over 45 games with the Guardians ACL team. Francisca shows plus bat-to-ball skills and plate approach with developing power. His raw power is average for age and level and improvements to his swing path in the coming years should have positive impacts on his ball flight.

Prospect Trades

Sabin Ceballos Heads To San Francisco In Soler Trade

In a double #oldfriend alert, the Braves acquired OF Jorge Soler and RHP Luke Jackson from the Giants. In return, San Francisco received LHP Tyler Matzek and 3B prospect Sabin Ceballos, who ranked No. 26 in Atlanta’s midseason update. An under-slot third-round selection in 2023, Ceballos slashed .259/.353/.354 with three homers in 84 games with High-A Rome. The third baseman has impressive raw power and generates ample bat speed, although it hasn’t translated to in-game power just yet, and has a strong arm at third base albeit with limited range, leading some scouts to wonder if he’s a potential catcher conversion candidate.

Rockies Land LHP Luis Peralta In Exchange For Beeks

The Pirates, who are 54-52 and two games out of a wild card spot, added to their bullpen Monday night, acquiring Rockies LHP Jalen Beeks in exchange for No. 24 prospect LHP Luis Peralta. The younger brother of Freddy Peralta, Luis pitched his way to the upper minors (and onto Pittsburgh’s Top 30) on the strength of his overpowering plus 94-96 mph fastball. The 23-year-old has 64 strikeouts through 39.2 innings. He has the ceiling of a high-leverage lefty bullpen arm if he can harness both an effective breaking ball and his overall strike-throwing. Beeks saved nine games for the Rockies and provides Pittsburgh another experience late-inning lefty alongside Aroldis Chapman.

RHP Michael Flynn Heads To Rays In Dodgers Amed Rosario Deal

The Dodgers acquired utilityman Amed Rosario for the second time in as many deadlines, this time sending RHP Michael Flynn to the Rays in exchange. Flynn was taken in the sixth round of the 2018 draft by the Pirates. He was released in 2021, then signed by the Mariners in May 2022. He was signed by the Dodgers as a minor league free agent in December 2023 and has spent this season between Double-A and Triple-A, where he’s struck out 59 hitters in 42.1 innings. He works with four- and two-seam fastballs as well as a cutter and slider. He tops out around 95 mph, with the cutter coming in a couple of ticks slower. Flynn throws his mid-80s slider more than any of his fastball varieties, which is understandable considering it gets whiffs and chases at rates better than 30%.

Walter Pennington Heads To Rangers In Lorenzen Trade

Astute Baseball America readers may have noticed LHP Walter Pennington’s name pop up in several Hot Sheets this year, including our spring training ranking that tabbed him as an under-the-radar pitcher to watch in the Royals system. The nondrafted Colorado School of Mines product gets more whiffs than you might expect from a low-90s heater and a plus slider. The Rangers acquired Pennington on Monday afternoon from the Royals in exchange for RHP Michael Lorenzen.

Mariners Add Justin Turner From Blue Jays For OF RJ Schreck

Nearing 40 years of age, Justin Turner continues to prove himself a valuable asset. On Monday, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported that the Mariners will be the latest team (Turner’s sixth) to try to capitalize on that value by agreeing to a trade with the Blue Jays for the the 16-year veteran. Though his power numbers are down (six homers in 89 games), Turner still brings his usual selective patience at the plate, slashing .253/.348/.370 this season with a .793 OPS against lefthanders. He is limited defensively and primarily a DH these days but can still fill in at a few spots in the infield (mainly first base).

According to multiple reports, the return for Toronto will be OF RJ Schreck. Drafted in the ninth round out of Vanderbilt last year and signed for $75,000, the 24-year-old has been a feel-good story for the Mariners, as he’s hit his way to Double-A is his first full season. He hit .261/.401/.464 over 78 games with High-A Everett while walking more than he struck out. Schreck’s barrel rate of 17% is a hint at his ability to make square contact consistently and could be among the top reasons the Blue Jays valued him.

LEODALIS DE VRIES IS HEATING UP

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Sean Sullivan, LHP, Rockies: Sullivan does not throw hard, but he gets results. The lefty’s fastball this season sits in the mid 80s and has touched 93, but it has still garnered a miss rate of nearly 26%. In fact, all three of his pitches have miss rates north of 25%, and his changeup has an absurd mark of 48%. Add all that up and you get a pitcher who’s been wholly dominant all season. After two dynamic outings last week, Sullivan, part of the growing glut of Wake Forest alums in pro ball, now has 101 strikeouts and just eight walks all season over the course of 83.1 innings. He headlines this week’s Hot Sheet, which Baseball America subscribers can see below.
