JJ Wetherholt, SS, Cardinals: The livelier MLB baseballs suit Wetherholt very well. Unlike the lower levels of the minors, Triple-A uses MLB baseballs. After hitting seven home runs in 62 Double-A games, Wetherholt hit his sixth home run in just 16 games with Triple-A Memphis. He went 3-for-5 on Sunday. Maybe as notable, Wetherholt played third base for the first time as a pro. Nolan Arenado is on the injured list with a shoulder strain, which could open up a spot for Wetherholt to fill in at third base.

Termarr Johnson, 2B, Pirates: It's been a rough season at Double-A Altoona for Johnson. Coming into Sunday's game, Johnson had yet to have a game with two or more extra-base hits. He snapped that streak with a 3-for-4 game where he tripled and homered. Johnson is hitting .253/.337/.386 overall this season with nine home runs and 22 extra-base hits.

Mick Abel, RHP, Twins: Five days after he was traded to the Twins for Jhoan Duran, Abel allowed just one hit in five scoreless innings. He struck out seven and walked two. Across his Lehigh Valley and St. Paul starts, Abel has thrown five or more scoreless innings in three of his past four starts. Abel sat at 94-95 mph, getting three whiffs with his four-seamer, three with his 86-88 mph slider, two with his low-80s curveball and one with his high-80s changeup.

Kemp Alderman, OF, Marlins: Alderman went 4-for-4 with a double and a pair of home runs on Sunday for Double-A Pensacola in his best game of the season. Alderman had been in a bit of a power outage. He had hit one home run in his previous 17 games before his outburst on Sunday. Alderman is hitting .287/.336/.452 overall this year with 12 home runs and 17 stolen bases.

Michael Forret, RHP, Orioles: Forret held Bowling Green hitless for four innings, allowing just one walk while striking out five. Forret has been kept on a very short pitch count limit: he's yet to throw 80 pitches in an outing. But he has dominated in his short stints. He's 1-2, 1.65 with a .154 opponents average with 70 strikeouts and 16 walks in 54.2 innings.

10 Statcast Standouts: Every Monday morning, we highlight 10 players who stood out to us based on their underlying Statcast metrics. Data will usually be through Saturday of that week, but may include some data from Sunday games. These are not full scouting reports, but often serve as good early indicators of prospects who might be ready to break out or are demonstrating MLB-ready skills.

Last week, we made the case for Hao-Yu Lee as a top-100 caliber prospect and marveled at Carter Jensen's enormous power ceiling. This week we'll discuss:

  • Did the Rays fix Forrest Whitley?

  • Eli's new prospect crush

  • The next great Braves pitcher

  • A pair of Cubs hitters brimming with potential

  • Is it too soon to crown a new king in Canada?

  • Is Nick Schnell more than a Quad-A player?

  • Christian Franklin's clearer path to the majors

  • Will the Rays unlock Everson Pereira?

  • A name to know in the Reds' org

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Braden Davis, LHP, Cardinals: As Geoff Pontes wrote here, no pitcher has had a better July than Davis. Though undersized compared to typical power arms and working with a low-90s fastball, he maximizes his arsenal. His heater plays up thanks to above-average ride, and he pairs it with a plus changeup that has helped him generate a 22% swinging strike rate over the past 30 days—the second-highest at his level. RoboScout still projects Davis as a potential back-end starter, but that projection could tick up if his recent run proves more indicative of his true talent than his full-season body of work.
