These 10 Prospects From Arizona Spring Training Need To Be On Your Radar
Here are prospect updates from last night. Plus, Baseball America's Josh Norris canvassed the backfields in Arizona last week. These names are on the rise.
Prospect Wire, powered by Louisville Slugger, is Baseball America’s new free home for in-season daily news, analysis and filterable season stats for every player ranked in a Top 30. Check that out here.
Today’s update is shorter than usual due to a limited slate of action last night. So below, find our latest subscriber-exclusive piece diving into 10 buzzy names from minor league spring training in Arizona.
Prospect Standouts
Trey Lipscomb, 3B, Nationals: It’s always useful to make a good first impression, which is exactly what Lipscomb is doing. Added to the roster after the first game of the season, Lipscomb went 2-for-4 on Monday, which is the third straight game where he’s gotten a hit since his callup. Lipscomb’s five hits are actually tied for best on the Nationals this season, and he’s hitting .455/.500/.727.
Nolan Schanuel, 1B, Angels: Angels first baseman Nolan Schanuel extended his career on-base streak to 32 games, but even more importantly, he hit his first home run of the season with a solo homer off of George Soriano in the sixth inning of the Angels’ 7-4 win over the Marlins. It was Schanuel’s first home run of the season and second overall. He’s hitting .231/.375/.462.
Joe Boyle, RHP, Athletics: Boyle’s first start of the 2024 season was one to forget. The A’s No. 8 prospect gave up eight hits, walked four, threw a wild pitch and gave up three stolen bases in just 2.2 innings of work. He gave up eight runs, seven of which were earned. The A’s had five errors altogether in a sloppy game, but Boyle committed one of them himself with a wild throw on a pickoff attempt. Boyle’s 96-98 mph fastball and high-80s slider can be dominant when he gets ahead, but his bottom-of-the-scale control can be a problem. He threw only 57% strikes on Monday.
