Prospect Standouts

Michael Curialle, 3B, Cardinals: There have been seven three-homer games in the minor leagues so far this year. None is less expected than Curialle’s on Sunday. The High-A Peoria third baseman and Cardinals’ 2022 12th-round pick came into Sunday with one extra-base hit in 15 games this year. In his first 146 pro games, he had two home runs. But on Sunday, Curialle homered in the first, third and fifth innings.

Diego Cartaya, C, Dodgers: Cartaya’s 2024 season has started as bad as his 2023 season ended. The Double-A Tulsa catcher hit .189/.278/.379 with Tulsa to end 2023. He’s hitting .172/.341/.297 this year, and he came into Sunday’s game with just two extra-base hits. Cartaya doubled that extra-base hit total in one game. He hit his second home run of the season on Sunday and added his second double. Cartaya has to get better against fastballs. According to Synergy Sports data, he was hitting .091 against fastballs through last Tuesday’s game.

Coby Mayo, 3B, Orioles: Mayo hit his second home run in three games and his 13th of the season to tie Joey Loperfido for the MiLB home run lead. Mayo began May with home runs in each of the first two games, and then he went into his first slump of the season. He was 1-for-25 over a six-game stretch, but he’s 5-for-13 with two home runs and two doubles in the past three games for Triple-A Norfolk.

J.T. Ginn, RHP, Athletics: Ginn was promoted to Triple-A Las Vegas after six starts for Double-A Midland. He responded with his best start of the season, holding Round Rock to one run in six innings. Ginn held the Express to four hits, two walks and a hit-by-pitch. He struck out 10. Ginn relied heavily on his low-80s slider, largely attacking hitters with a sinker-slider approach. He topped out at 94 mph.

James Wood, OF, Nationals: Wood is on another tear for Triple-A Rochester. In the first game of a doubleheader against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Wood homered twice, giving him five home runs in a three-game stretch. Wood also walked in that game, and then went 1-for-2 with another walk in the nightcap. He’s now walked seven times and only struck out six times in May. He’s hitting .351/.452/.595 overall with seven home runs and nine steals in 10 attempts in 34 games.

Ariel Almonte, OF, Reds: Almonte is having a season for Low-A Daytona that is hard to describe so far. He hit his 10th home run of the season on Friday, which is five more than anyone else in the Florida State League. No one has hit more than 20 home runs in an FSL season since the pandemic, so Almonte’s home run production is outlandish. That’s the good news, but Almonte is hitting .198 with a 36% strikeout rate. Almonte has 10 home runs, two doubles and six singles this year.

Festa, Noel Highlight 10 Statcast Standouts

10 Statcast Standouts (May 13)

Each Monday, we look at 10 standouts with impressive data from the previous week of action. Whereas last week focused on some premium prospects, this week we’re analyzing some players with less notoriety.

Twins RHP David Festa fits the bill. The 6-foot-6 righty has 48 strikeouts and 30 innings and is coming off one of the most effective outings of his career. We dig into Festa’s arsenal, including a slider that has a significant amount of gyro spin.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Daniel Schneemann, UTIL, Guardians: Schneemann is RoboScout’s interesting unheralded name this week. Schneemann entered the Triple-A top 25 and has played shortstop, third base, right field, second base, and left field for Triple-A Columbus. After having never exceeded a 120 wRC+ at any previous level in any previous season, the 2018 33rd-round draft pick out of BYU has a 166 wRC+ with seven home runs and four stolen bases in 150 plate appearances. At face value, that translates to something like a 110 wRC+, 20 home run, and 10 stolen base equivalency in the major leagues. I expect that he will be called up to Cleveland this season and, if the season’s production is indicative of a true change in talent, he should be able to be a useful strong-side platoon production as a utility-type in fantasy.
